Today we had Abby dedicated at church. As our Pastor correctly noted, the dedication was as much for us as it was for Abby. When you look at it from that perspective, and as we very much believe, the Dedication is an opportunity to publicly declare that we accept our child as a gift from God and that we also accept responsibility for her spiritual upbringing. That is, perhaps, a simple way of summarizing one of the most serious and complex responsibilities of Christian parenting, but it’s sobering nonetheless.

Abby was awake and alert through the whole event but didn’t make a peep. In fact, shortly after returning to our seats, I layed her in my lap and she fell asleep. For me, it was quite an experience. Events like this always tend to awaken your senses and stir some degree of emotion, especially when they involve something as precious as a infant and particularly when he or she is your own.

As Abby was drifting off to sleep and the congregation was singing, I felt an indescribable ease come over me and could almost hear God say to me, “Have peace, she belongs to me!” I’m sure there will be plenty of challenges, struggles, and learing experiences as we raise Abby but there will also be at least as many opportunities to grow in our faith and I’m thankful that I know we can count on that peace as long as our confidence is in Christ.

I’ve started a downloads page. Currently, it only has one sample Access database but I hope to post a few other downloads soon. Most of what I post will probably be sample office files and scripts that I’ve used for various tasks at work.

Many of the things I’ve learned over the years have been with the help of information and examples that other people have posted on the web. I hope that posting a few things myself will be of some help to someone. If you do stumble upon the page, download something, and find it useful, let me know. Of course, I’m open to suggestions for improving anything that I post as well.

Why did this take so long? Well, as the title suggests, I could offer endless excuses but no good reasons. It really doesn’t make much sense. I am a Director of Information Technology in the nonprofit community, have worked in the IT industry or related technical fields for 10 years now, and first discovered the joys of Wordpress over 6 months ago. I could write about how hard it is to find enough time in the day, how I started out skeptical about the Web 2.0 phenomenon, or how it’s difficult to overcome that initial feeling of vulnerability that results from the exposure that is inherent to blogging.

Instead, I’ll stop complaining and start blogging…Finally! After all, Wordpress is so easy to use and so accessible as open source software, there aren’t any technical barriers. Actually, I’ve been playing around with it for quite some time. The direction the web has gone in the last few years is fascinating and there’s no doubt that the maturity of some of the more prominent open source efforts has had a significant impact. I am also quickly becoming a fan of Joomla!

So, what do I plan to blog about? Obviously, everyone that starts blogging faces that question and I’ve thought a great deal about it…and thought…and thought…and thought. See, there’s another excuse! The odd thing is this isn’t even my first post so to some extent, I’ve already answered that question. It stands to reason that I would post on topics that are related to my own experiences and interests. I think I will also aim to share information that I find interesting and informative, things that are relevant to my life and work, and my thoughts on specific topics.

The bottom line is that I have finally come around to viewing blogs and blogging in much in same way that others did a long time ago. So, I’m diving into the blog pool…come and join me!

After several weeks off, our chickens have finally gotten back to work. I found two eggs in the nesting box yesterday and another one this morning.

I don’t know if the hiatus was a result of the trauma they suffered, their getting used to us and a new caretaking routine, or coincidental and normal. I have heard that hens go through periods where they don’t lay but I haven’t done much research on the matter.

Everyone says that fresh eggs taste quite a bit different and are far superior to what you can buy in the store but we haven’t eaten any yet so stay tuned…
